Network, network, network. Being connected is paramount for success in the 21st century, especially for young and early-career professionals. When networking, keep in mind that the key to success is building intimate, sincere relationships based on honesty and trust.
Here are three ideas to better leverage the power of networking everywhere you go.
1. You’re always networking.
Networking doesn’t just take place at cocktail receptions or conferences, it takes place every day. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can take advantage of these opportunities. Something as simple as a long line at a coffee shop is a great example. A comment on how long the line is, followed by introductions, and some chit-chat provides a window into who you are, what you do, and what you’re working on.
2. Push your brand.
Not your organization’s brand, your brand — the way we interact socially reflects our own personal brand. How you package it, promote it, and sell it is up to you. When you’re in that long line at the coffee shop, that’s your time to promote the best product you have…you! It’s important to remember your brand isn’t just your face to face interactions with others. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. are all mediums you use to brand yourself. Make sure there isn’t stuff out there that detracts from the person you want to are and want to present.
3. Have a game plan.
If you are going to an event where there are many people you can network with, go in with a plan of action. Sometimes you can’t meet all the people you want to meet, and if you don’t know at least a couple of people you want to meet you can miss some valuable opportunities. Some people plan on asking questions and meeting speakers at conferences. It’s up to you, but make sure you have a general sense of the direction you want to go with your time.
