Tell us a about yourself, your work, and the needs you’re addressing.
Before coming to the Community Idea Stations, I worked for local financial institutions as a lawyer and compliance director for 12 years. I took a couple years off and started volunteering. I wanted to “wear a white hat” in my next job, and I started volunteering at the Community Idea Stations because I believed that public broadcasting is important in the community. I started working full time handling social media when a position opened up at the station. Our vision is all about using media to make our community great, and I love the fact that we implement that vision in shows like Virginia Currents on TV and radio, Charlottesville Inside Out on TV, as well as in live broadcasts of big community events like the Richmond Folk Festival and Richmond Forum.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
I love feeling like I add value by bringing the knowledge and experience I developed in my previous positions to help the Community Idea Stations do things better, reach more people, and create a bigger impact.
Tell us about a major challenge you have faced and your biggest accomplishment in this position.
I often think that getting people to adopt new processes or tools or to take managed risks is an ongoing challenge and opportunity for nonprofits. I like to think that I’ve been able to help our organization be more proactive and strategic in using our virtual platforms to engage with our constituents and enable two-way communications.
How are you leveraging ConnectVA to achieve your mission?
I find the ConnectVA website and newsletters to be useful to learn about what other nonprofits are doing. I love, love, love the seminars and webinars that ConnectVA makes available, and the networking is so helpful to me, especially as someone who did not start out as a nonprofit professional. As someone in the web and technology arena, I learn a lot just from chatting with other nonprofit professionals about great tools, platforms, and strategies.
What’s coming next for you and/or for your organization that really excites you?
I manage a relatively new fundraiser for the Community Idea Stations called the Big Idea Challenge, which will be on June 4th this year. This year the event will support PBS Kids and Ready to Learn – all of the great kid shows and outreach that we do. We provide so much support to parents and caregivers and to needy kids through these programs, and many people are unaware of the impact that we have with these outreach activities. I’m excited to have the opportunity to shine the light on these programs and hopefully raise some money to support and expand these activities with the Big Idea Challenge.
