I just joined the board of an organization that is working to establish a farmed animal sanctuary in the greater Richmond area. (We do not own property yet for the sanctuary, and are still developing our long-term budget projections to ensure we have a plan to get everything we need).
We want to be prepared to understand all that’s required once we get to the point of needing to hire an employee (who would be a caretaker for animals on the sanctuary, once we have the property and have sufficient animals so that our all-volunteer crew would not be able to provide them the top-notch care they deserve). What should we be prepared for? Payroll taxes, health insurance, you name it–is there a list somewhere we can follow for how to be in compliance legally and/or tips from y’all’s experience with a small, volunteer-run group like ours hiring staff officially?
